There’s a particular kind of bride who doesn’t need much fanfare. She’s chosen a dress that she feels comfortable in, flowers that look like they were just picked from the garden, and a venue that lets the landscape do the talking. She’s not trying to impress anyone. She just wants to be married.
Those are my favorite weddings to photograph.
This past summer, I had the privilege of second shooting a wedding at a church in Waynesboro, Virginia. It was a small, genuinely beautiful celebration set against the kind of open farmland and Blue Ridge view that reminds you why people move to the Shenandoah Valley and never leave. A white sailcloth tent, a thrifted satin wedding dress, a checkerboard dance floor, and candlelight at dusk. Nothing overdone, and everything intentional.
And the photos? They’re some of the most simple yet enthralling images I’ve made all year.
the more a couple places importance on the marriage itself over the details and the to-do’s, the more room there is for real moments to happen on the wedding day. When there isn’t a mile-long shot list or an expectation to perform, people just live in the day and the experience.
That’s not a function of budget or venue size. It’s a function of two people focused on each other and their supportive guests.
